Grand Hotel 1911

I already yammered about my weekend in a locked post, so I'm just going to post pictures. And brief commentary.

We took most of our photos in the Grand Hotel gardens, mostly because they're pretty and the inside of it isn't.

Mr. Esch (aka Julie's dad) took these; I saw him back there behind the flower beds, but didn't realize what was going on until after.

I didn't actually mean to sit down for this, but as we were discussing the debatable cleanliness of the bench, which turned out to be clean, by the way, my heels sunk into the soft lawn and I had two choices: Sit or fall.

I love that fountain.

Fortunately, I didn't get water spots from this.

I kind of like this one.

This looks kind of dignified and/or artsy, but I was actually busy counting windows on the hotel.

Round Island in the background--my favorite Straits-area lighthouse.

We had a five-course dinner, including dessert. Left top clockwise: raspberry panna cotta, cheesecake trio with kumquat and blood orange sauce, pecan ball, and creme brulee.

I was kind of afraid I wouldn't be able to get the back-combing out of my hair at the end of the night, so I told Julie that in case of emergency, she should just pour the rest of my bottle of conditioner over my head and run away.
The End!
Oh, and for those of you that wondered what my new haircut looks like...

Also, I went shooting with Matt on Sunday.

Date: 2008-09-27 04:53 am (UTC)Ooh, swords! I don't actually own any because a) lack of storage, b) lack of skill, c) accident prone. But I like them from a distance. :)

When they were doing Romeo and Juliet where my kid is in college ... Opening Scene ... I leaned over to the husband and said "how many of those swords are ours?" His remark was that the better question would have been "how many are NOT ours ...." He and the child have a collection. Lots of Fencing Blades (he's a coach and now SCA authorized) and then the things that you just hang on the wall.

Date: 2008-09-27 01:43 am (UTC)See, the thing about the Grand Hotel is that their theme is geraniums. So the parlor level, which is the level that opens onto that famous porch, is decorated in red, green, and black. The carpet is black with giant geraniums and ribbons in red and lime green. The furniture is a mix of styles from Victorian to...I don't even know what...in red and green. And black. The carpet on the stairs leading to the upper levels is red and green and black, only with crosshatching lines of red and green, rather than a giant flower print. OUR room was on the third floor, which wasn't quite as bad, but, well, I have a video. The carpet was green and black with little red flowers along the border and the walls had mint green and white stripes.
