So I had an absolute blast on Sound of Music and was primarily in charge of makeup. With fifty-six (plus) cast members, I could not do everyone's myself. Instead, I taught everyone how to apply their own, helping when they needed it, and then had to do some specialty stuff on the main characters. For example, without additional contouring for his face, our Captain Von Trapp looked about fourteen years old on stage. Cute, but he's supposed to be forty-something. Hmm. Anyway, by the time we were closing the show, I felt really good about how some of the makeup looked, and some of the pictures my mom took with the yearbook camera are reaaaaally nice. So I figured, why not share the love?

Frau Schmidt (Holly) telling Captain Von Trapp (John) that the last governess quit.

Captain: Has Louisa been playing tricks again? Putting toads in her bed?
Frau Schmidt: ...She didn't complain of that, sir... (Nervous finger tapping)

Captain looking a bit crosseyed. This is just after his children make an appearance wearing the infamous curtain costumes.

Mother Abbess (Julie), Sister Margaretta (Holly), and Sister Berte (Lyndsey) sing about Maria.

Holy crap Captain looking wistful at his dinner party, with Brigitta in the periphery. Just for the record, Caroline, who played this Brigitta, was just AMAZING. Especially since she started out shy and terrified.

Frau Schmidt is less than pleased when Herr Zellar tells her she must hang the Nazi flag. "I take my orders only from Captain Von Trapp!" (Go Frau Schmidt!)

Nun #3 (Christy: Part of "The Six," for the six-part harmonies on How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria and Climb Every Mountain), Maria (Laura), and Admiral Vonn Schreiber (Lance). Everyone thought we had rented that Admiral's uniform, but nope--my mother made that.

Franz, the butler (Matt), and Frau Schmidt at the cast party.

Also, my "pet" set would be the Von Trapp interior. Mom, Mrs. Nelson and I all got together to help design it, and quite a few of our ideas survived to be built into the final set. It was really pretty exciting.

The picture quality on these isn't awesome 'cause I just uploaded them straight to Photobucket. If I had to take the time to resize and resave them, I'd never get around to it 'cause I'm lazy like that.

That clock was bought way before we designed anything definitive, but it was perfect. And they set it to the appropriate time, too.

Stage Left. The couch didn't look too hot up close, but it was pretty from a distance.

Stage Right. The set pieces all doubled as something else. This set is three pieces. Stage Right turned around to become the terrace French Doors, Center & Left turned around to be Maria's bedroom. Also, that chair didn't used to be blue. They painted it. Hideous up close, great from the audience.

Lance's family is largely responsible for building this amazing thing. That balcony railing was so over-engineered you could stand on it and not have to worry. It was fantastic. :D

That set is positively lovely! And all the kids look very well made up. ^____^ lovely job to you and your mum for those great costumes, too! Bravo!

Thanks, ma'am! :D I had such a great time...I almost wish it wasn't over, but I'm glad of the downtime. ;D

I surfed over here from the costume lj. I did summer stock, and they had turning sets too! Ours were triangle shaped from the top, so we could dress them three ways. They mustve had wearhouse where they kept them they were so tall.

This set description reminded me of that. And yeah for the 10 foot rule: If it looks good at ten feet, it's good enough. :P And sometimes it can be 15 feet if you have a pit between you and the front row.

Ah, how I loved that set...everyone would have loved to store it whole, but there was no way to get it out of the gym because the pieces wouldn't go through the door--too tall, too wide, too deep. Sigh. When it came time for teardown, that set lasted the longest because nobody had the heart to hack it apart.

And the couch and chair were perfectly within the ten-foot rule! Nobody ever knew they were held together with hot glue on the upholstery and painted! ;)
