ktlovelySo I was tinkering with my info on LJ. Seems that Eowyn/Faramir has a better LJ fan following than Aragorn/Arwen. Heehee, we win!! I love Eowyn and Faramir, even though it was Tolkein having mercy on poor Eowyn, it's the sweetest story.
I don't really read LOTR fanfiction, because fanfiction tends to do icky things to characters. Like make them have love triangles and all sorts of things. Now, I really don't care in cases like Gundam Wing or what have you, but Lord of the Rings is different. Therefore, I just don't read LOTR fanfic much. I have read a few Eowyn/Faramir stories, though, just to indulge myself...and I really don't like how most authors portray Eowyn.
Now, I know that Eowyn is the Shieldmaiden of Rohan. She would rather fight than pretty much anything else. But for most of her life, she's been doing anything and everything other than fighting. She was young when she went to live in Meduseld, wasn't she? And then when Saruman broke Theoden's mind, who do you think really started taking care of things? I'm not betting on Eomer or Theodred. It would be *very* possible (even in the real world) that Eowyn pretty much ran Meduseld for a number of years before we meet her in The Two Towers. Read Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman. The Lady of the manor doesn't sit and get waited on. She oversees everything. She has to know how to cook, sew, clean, and delegate tasks to servants. Heck--Peter Jackson fell into the "she knows nothing but fighting" trap, with that stew scene. I excuse that by saying that they were on the run and she was short on supplies, but still. Don't real people have more than one facet, or even more than two? Imagine that! A person can be the Shieldmaiden, Dernhelm, AND a bang-up cook, all at the same time!
Mr. Jackson, you did a wonderful job with those movies. It's just that I prefer my Eowyn with a little more depth, thank you.
